What I've been reading and listening to lately…
As the past 6 months in semi-lockdown have whizzed by (or travelled at a snail's pace!), I've been reading more and listening to lots of podcasts. Here are some of my recent favourites...
How to Save a Planet
Gimlet Media produce some of my favourite podcasts, and this latest one is on form. Hosted by scientist and self-described policy nerd Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Gimlet co-founder (and former science teacher) Alex Blumberg, the podcast features discussions about the available options for tackling the effects of climate change. It breaks down what other countries are doing to support (or deny) the effects on climate change on its citizens, and helps to connect the dots of movements like Black Lives Matter to climate change solutions.
Death of a Typographer
From Melbourne writer Nick Gadd, Death of a Typographer is a noir-stye story of a series of murders with typography as the common thread. This darkly comic novel is littered with lots of references that will make graphic designers and font enthusiasts chortle. Designed (and possibly inspired) by my former studio mate Stephen Banham, Death of a Typographer is a fun, light read for these heavy times! (Just some typography humour thrown in there for good measure).
Sweatpants Forever
While I've had a life-long interest in fashion and clothing, I prioritise buying clothing that is timeless, made from natural materials, and almost always pre-loved. So this story about the catwalk fashion industry post-COVID struck me as having an air of Greek Tragedy (perhaps with the chorus clothed in ethically made sweat suits – just picture it). The bubble has truly burst.
Ira Glass interviewed live by Debbie Millman
This is just a nice conversation with two excellent people – design guru Debbie Millman and This American Life podcast host Ira Glass. Listen and LOL with me about Ira Glass always having balloon animal materials on hand, which I think serves as an important example of being pivot-ready in your career at all times ;D
Passion. Purpose. Profit.
And finally, Melbourne business coach and all-round good egg Fiona Killackey has written a smart, generous, and engergising book for small business owners at any stage of their business. I'm only halfway through, but it is rich with practical, sage advice for anyone rethinking and/or re-strategising their small business right now.
